Great hard drive

Strengths: Fast, whisper-quiet, reasonably low power usage, 3 year warranty on OEM drives.

Weakness: Still has moving parts, like every other drive.

Western Digital drives have become the de-facto standard for quiet computing, with both low power usage (hence low heat dissipation) and excellent acoustics. The WD5000AAKS is a 3x166GB platter-design, which should improve on the already-excellent performance of the 4-platter WD5000KS.

Western Digital's second generation SATA drives are fast and competitive in both price and features. Further, Western Digital still offers advance RMAs at no charge, unlike Seagate who at the time of writing charges for that service. Samsung drives are the only other ones I'd consider purchasing at the moment.

One thing to note is that Western Digital's website claims that they will only honor their 3-year warranty for OEM drives purchased from "authorized" vendors. That list can be found here: www.wdc.com/en/buy/whe.... It's not clear that they will refuse warranty for other drives, but caveat emptor.

Great Hard Drive

Strengths: This drive is worth the money. I've always used WD and I am always happy with my purchase.

Weakness: Can't find a single one. It's a hard drive, what else do you want.

I recommend ordering from a retailer you trust and has a good warranty and return policy. And for those who are saying that they are losing HD space, try turning off system restore for that drive . But only if it is a secondary drive. Although I recommend leaving it on because you may need it one day.

very fast and easy

Strengths: 500 Gb, price, speed... and on and on

Weakness: this is the "bare drive" version, and it is just that. don't expect more that just the drive!

This drive arrived in a mf sealed plastic envelope, wrapped in bubble wrap, nested in a big box of peanuts. (excellent packaging!) The "bare drive" version is just exactly that. There were no screws, no documentation, not even an invoice in the box. (I didn't need those things, so it was no big deal.) I installed this drive in about 3 minutes. It appears to be perfect. I am upgrading from an 80 Gb (secondary) drive, so this is a big improvement for me! I ordererd this on the 10th, paid for 2-day shipping, and it arrived on the 12th. I could not be happier about the product, the price, or the service I received from mwave.com! A+++

Western Digital 500GB HDD great for everything

Strengths: 3 platter design Fast seek, read, and write times. It's S-ATA-300. Western Digital offers RMAs from most of the sellers on PriceGrabber free of cost

Weakness: Not optimized for RAID (simply put, more than 1 hard drive acting as a single drive)

This is a Western Digital hard drive. I've had other brands, and WD is one of the few brands that seem to survive the test of time. The write time for this model is 2 ms slower than the 5000ABYS model. However, the ABYS model is made for RAID.

All in all, an excellent hard drive, and should go well with my other two.

Good buy

Strengths: Reliable, quiet, fast cache

Weakness: None

This is my second WD 500G drive. I added a second drive for media storage. The access time is fast. The drive is quiet. I've been using these drives for about 6 months and so far no problem found. Never got any error on routine drive scan. Sata set up is easy and windows XP recognizes the drive right away.

n Caviar SE16 500GB Hard Drive (Serial ATA-300,...

Strengths: 160GB platters makes for higher density and therefore less noise, vibration, and heat.

Weakness: Retail version only has 1-year warranty

Save for the warranty (OEM version has 3 years) and excellent drive that's quiet, fast, and cool. This and Samsung HD501LJ are probably the class of the 500GB field right now. WD also offers advanced replacement warranty service.

Western Digital HHD are the best!

Strengths: 500GB, SATA2, PRICE, SPEED, WD NAME, OEM w/ 3 Yrs Warranty (Retail = 1yr)

Weakness: Some say it gets a little hot

I love Western Digital Hard Drives. I would never buy any other brand. I have never had a WD hard drive fail on me. I currently own a 36GB Raptor, this 500GB (replacing a 120GB WD drive), and an external 250GB. If you want smooth, reliable and fast drives go with WD!

"I have never had a WD hard drive fail on me."

All hard-drives eventually fail - they fail faster than most other components. Desktop (non-server) hard-drives are not built to last more than about 5 years. This would imply that you have never had a WD hard-drive for more than 5 years. What would be more helpful is if you could specify how long you have had these WD hard-drives.

It does its job

Strengths: Lots of space, nice price.

Weakness: Only 465 GB useable. That's 35 off. A lot of missing space if you ask me.

So far so good. A nice addition to my 200 GB (80+60+80 external) It's my first time ordering a Western Digital drive and I have no complaints. Would definitely buy again if possible.

NA must be relying on Microsoft's display that shows 465 GB.
Microsoft's 1 GB should now be written more precisely as 1 GiB
(gigibyte) which is actually 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Disk manufacturers always use 1,000,000,000 bytes as 1 GB.
So, there is no deception there. NA is just ignorant about
the two similar but distinct units in referring to the disk
capacity. It is Microsoft that confuses everyone. They should
use 500 GB or 465 GiB.

To learn more about this read the following page

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibibyte

Now, as to my review of WD5000AAKS, my ASUS A8N32-SLI BIOS
apparently has bug in accessing the disk, I cannot use the
disk as a boot disk. Once in a Win XP environment, the disk
performs flawlessly. I downloaded the latest BIOS from ASUS
but still cannot make it boot successfully. The BIOS has
difficulty reading the MBR, apparently.

One thing you may or may not be aware of is the fact that the term GB, in HDD term is only 1 billion bytes, not the 1,024,000,000 bytes that is a true GigaByte. I remember back in the day when I paid $300.00 for a 2 GB HDD, and today I can get one that is 500 GB for about a hundred dollars. 250 times the storage space, for about a third the cost. God I love Innovative Technology! :D

Quiet, Fast, Affordable. Great buy!

Strengths: SATAII speed. Performance benchmarks are great too. Quiet too!

Weakness: Ughh... none that i can think of.

This harddrive is a great buy. The performance is fast! This thing was qualified to earn a 5.9 (highest score) on Vista's index meter. I use XP so I have no tried to verify this yet but that was one of the selling points. Another selling point is that it is quiet. Highly recommended since this only cost a few bucks more compared to other louder harddrives like my Seagate Barracuda 7200.10.

All good except not latest technology

Strengths: Very fast data transfer rate, easy setup, very good price, pretty quiet, good warranty, proven reliability

Weakness: No perpendicular recording technology

I purchased this product because of its capacity, seek times, reliability, its price and most importantly, data transfer rates. I also eliminated other models from consideration due to not being quite as quiet as this model. I wanted the perpendicular recording technology, but it is a bit more expensive and not as fast with the data transfer rate. On the other hand, the drive with perpendicular recording technology is reported by many to be nearly silent; however, the silence was not a sufficient enough reason for me to spend more and receive slower transfer rates.

This HDD is very quiet, has excellent data transfer rates and is recognized by Windows Vista. I have been happy with Caviar drives before, and am certain I will be just as happy with this HDD.

perpendicular recording technology is designed for drives 750G and larger... there is no advantage in using perpendicular recording. It is simply a way to "squeeze" more bits per physical space to allow for capacity like 750G
