Reviews for PlayStation 3 Blu-Ray Remote Control

PS3 - MPN: 98046

Not necessary, but (mostly) convenient.

Strengths: More intuitive movie access than PS3 sixaxis controller, a reasonable price (especially relative to other PS3 hardware).

Weakness: The STOP BUTTON, fast-fwd and rewind buttons don't operate symmetrically, lack of leymap customization.

I use my PS3 more for movies than games, so I bought this remote control as soon as it became available. It is a lot more convenient than the sixaxis controller (especially when you've got the lights down like when running the movie picture through a projector).

There are two flaws with this remote's operation -- although I'm not 100% sure that they couldn't be fixed by firmware control patches on the system itself. The first is that the the FFWD and REW buttons by default act differently (FF are at 1.5x with the first button press and 10x with the second, whereas rewind goes straight to 10x with the first press). This can get annoying when trying to find a specific spt, then overshooting it and having to crawl back to it or possibly overshoot it again. Why no 4x mode in between on the FFWD, and why not the same operation for the reverse button? (Incidentally, if I remember correctly, using the sixaxis triggers for FFWD and REw act more symmetrically, probably due to how the L1/2 and R1/2 buttons are mapped.)

The much lager annoyance is that by hitting the stop button it not only stops the movie, but dumps you out to the main PS3 system menu (which takes a reset of video mode both coming in and out, so it takes close to *20 seconds* to restart the movie if you accidentally hit this large key in the relative center of the controller. Again, why not make it stop the movie on the first press and exit to the system on the second (or exit tot he system on the PS key like in all games?)

It's a well-laid out controller, the bluetooth format is convenient (making it omnidirectional) and easy to set up and use, but some of the default keymappings (at least from firmwares 1.31 to 1.51) are inexplicably STUPID. If Sony fixes this -- or simply allows a little more customization of default operations -- this controller will be a must-have (especially at the price) for anyone who wants to watch Blu-Ray discs often on their PS3... And as soon as I see that happen with mine, my rating will change to 5 stars.

good

Strengths: It's easy to use, unlike ps3 controller

Weakness: price

This should have been included with the PS3 or allow the PS3 to accept IR so any remote could control it. Since it doesn't, this does the trick, works very well, each command is recognized instantly just like a remote control. It's easy to use and it's a lot better than the actual ps3 controller. This is easy to navigate and you don't need to point in the direction. Definetly worth the $25 to bring out the ease of your bluray player.

Bluetooth Remote Control for PlayStation 3

Strengths: Bluetooth, unlike RF Technology which requires line of sight to work.

Weakness: None!

What we love about this remote is that the placements of buttons are very well thought of, based on the common frequency of use. This being a Bluetooth remote, we no longer need to point the remote towards the PlayStation 3 console for it to work, as our console is hidden away behind our television. This remote can be underneath a blanket and it will still work!

What was Sony thinking?

Strengths: It's a remote.

Weakness: No backlight, confusing design.

I have a PS3 I use in my home theater, which is dark the way it's supposed to be. It's almost impossible to use this remote. Not only did Sony restrict me from using my nicely designed, control everything, harmony remote. But they restrict you to only use their own terrible design with tons of button and no backlight. It's almost impossible to use without being having the lights on. It really looks like this remote was made in the 80's.

Sony Blu-Ray Remote (PS3)

Strengths: Much easier controls for DVD\\\'s than the controller, Bluetooth doesn\\\'t require line-of-sight for use

Weakness: No light for remote for use in the dark

The Blu-Ray Remote control is a Bluetooth-based remote control for the PS3. Using Bluetooth instead of IR for controls means there\\\'s no need for line-of-sight for use of the remote, as well as the ability to control the PS3 from another room. The button layout is good and controls all aspects of the PS3 from the remote, though the remote doesn\\\'t light up for use in the dark. It\\\'s a minor issue on a very good remote.

Very nice remote

Strengths: Convienient, Nice look

Weakness: Some buttons are in odd places, the extra PS buttons add extra clutter

Using the PS3 as a DVD player is pretty nice. Especially as a BluRay player. Using the PS3 Sixaxis to control playback can be cumbersome however.

Enter the PS3 remote. It uses bluetooth and makes browsing the PS3 an ease and makes movie playback seem like you were using a normal dedicated movie player.

If this is the experience you are looking for this remote is a worthy purchase.

The only downside is there are a lot of buttons on this thing.

Sony Remote

Strengths: high quality remote, good button layout

Weakness: no on/off power button

This is a very good remote from sony. It has a very good design, feels good in your hand and easy to use. I just wish it had an on/off power button and it would be perfect for me. I am glad I decided to purchase this item.

Good Remote

Strengths: Works well, inexpensive, works through walls.

Weakness: Virtually impossible to use in a dark room, lots of buttons, No back-lighting or glow-in-the-dark. Having two menu buttons can be confusing.

The Playstation 3 Bluetooth Remote works really well for its intended purpose. Bluetooth here is much more more reliable than a typical IR remote. Even when pointed away from the device or when the device is in a closet it works.

I actually prefer the remote to the PS3 controller when navigating through menus or the playstation online store.

My first gripe is that it is impossible to read the buttons in the dark. I have a theater room which allows all of the lights to be turned off, but trying to use the remote in that environment is tough. Once you learn where the major play and pause buttons are, you can use those and then turn a light on. I wish there was a way to read it in the dark.

My second gripe is that it is difficult to know whether to press the "Top Menu" or "Pop Up/Menu" button on the remote to get to the menu on a standard DVD. Blu-ray movies have two different menu types, which is why there are two buttons. Both should work to get to the menu on a DVD.

My final comment relates more to the PS3 than the controller, but I do with there was a way to integrate with a universal remote. As good as this remote is, it would be better for non-technical users to have only one remote.

A Fine option...

Strengths: Inexpensive, performs standard functions well

Weakness: Not compatible with universal remotes. No power on/off button.

Like many others, my Blu Ray player is also my PS3. I was tired of using the controller to play movies, as it was incredibly frustrating. Luckily, the PS3 remote solved my problem. Now I can watch and control a movie comfortably, and without confusion. Unfortunately, there is no direct power on/off button, but thats not that big a deal (you can still turn it off thru remote functionality, you just have to navigate a few menus).

Overall, the cost is minimal if you're going to be using your PS3 to watch movies.

Very nice blu-ray remote

Strengths: Logical layout with easily to read button labels. Bluetooth conectivity means point the remote at the wall and PS3 will still get your signal.

Weakness: None.

My wife hates game consoles and refused to use the PS2 as a DVD player even with optional remote ... however she uses this remote with the PS3 for dvds and blu-rays with no problems! Trust me, that a feat!

gets the job done ...

Strengths: - cheap - solid remote - beats using a controller

Weakness: - bluetooth only - too many buttons - not lighted

This remote came packaged with my PS3 as part of a promotion. Thought I might not pay $25 for it, it's a pretty good remote. It is well laid out for controlling Blu-Ray playback, and although I don't love the number pad on top, I suppose that could come in handy if you find yourself frequently entering your credit card number at the Playstation Store. Speaking of, I think this remote is better than the controller for navigating the store.

This is a good product for those who wish to avoid the dorky feeling of watching movies with a videogame controller. It'd be nice if this included IR as well so it could control basic functions on a TV as well, but it does what it's supposed to well enough.

PS3 Bluetooth Remote

Strengths: Better than SIXAXIS controller, not too expensive

Weakness: Uses bluetooth not infrared, so cannot be used to control any other devices.

If you can find a decent price, this remote is definitely worth purchasing. It's much easier to watch movies using this remote than having to use the SIXAXIS controller. For people not familiar with gaming consoles, who just want to watch a movie, this remote will make it much easier for them.

Since the PS3 uses bluetooth instead of infrared for wireless communication, the functionality of this remote cannot be rolled into a universal remote, nor can this remote control any other devices.

Blu-ray remote for PS3

Strengths: Adequate Blu-ray remote for PS3

Weakness: None

Even though you can perform many of the basic remote functions (play/stop/forward/etc) with the PS3 controller, the PS3 blu-ray remote puts these functions at your fingertips so you don't have to guess which controller button does what. In general, the button layout for the remote is busy but manageable. The remote performs as described. No complaints about this first party product.

Must for all the Ps3 Owners

Strengths: Excellent Layout and includes all the functions at finger tips.

Weakness: Missing the universal part, given that pretty much every other remote is a universal one for devices.

Excellent Remote for all the Playstation 3 owner, must to have -
Its become much easy while trying to watch the BlueRay movie and give a good feel to have integrated in your home theatre when friends and family around - You don't look stupid on holding the game control while playing a blueray movie in front of your family and friends - saves bunch on embarrassments.

So, all the PS3 owner - just go for it.

better than the sixaxis

Strengths: omni directional, looks good

Weakness: hard to read in the dark, bluetooth only

If you use your PS3 to watch movies a lot then this will definitely be your friend. It's much easier to move around and control then using the PS3 controller.

Because it's a bluetooth device there's really no setup and the remote doesn't have to be pointed at the PS3 to work, which is very nice. But it also can't work with other learning universal remotes because of this fact.

A must have for ps3 owners

Strengths: Great button userface. Really handy and no need to have it in one line of sight

Weakness: doesn't do any extra stuff that the ps3 gaming control would do.

Would def recommend this to friends who own a ps3. great bluetooth device. highly recommended! For those of you who have an all in one i would stick with that but for those of you who just have a ps3. this is not a bad idea at all.

Pretty good bluetooth remote

Strengths: looks nice, typical Sony design, reasonable price

Weakness: no power on/off, not universal

If you use your PS3 for watching Blu-ray discs, having this remote is definitely more convenient than the PS3's controller. Buttons are straight forward and easy to use. Overall a pretty good remote.

PS3 remote

Strengths: good looking and well functioning

Weakness: no power button and no back lit

It is much easier to use than controller is. And it has good-sized and well functioning keys. But it doesn't have a power button and I can't see the keys in the dark because it doesn't have any back lit. Overall, I am satisfied with this remote. If it had a power button and is back lit, then I would give it five stars, Without them, it is four stars.

PS3 Bluetooth Blu-Ray Remote

Strengths: Uses Bluetooth technology, and better to use than the PS3 SIXAXIS controller.

Weakness: Since it is Bluetooth, not universal, and no power ON/OFF button. Not easy to read in dark.

The remote overall is a good buy if you do not like using the PS3's SIXAXIS controller. It does what it is meant to do for the PS3's Blu-Ray drive for movies. But the lack of a POWER button, glow buttons (for dark viewing), and since it is bluetooth, it cannot be used with universal remotes. Besides that overall decent remote and I got this free from a PS3 deal online. Worth it if you watch alot of movies in the PS3.

pretty good remote

Strengths: well constructed, looks nice, works well

Weakness: no power button, hard to see in the dark

this is the official remote for the ps3 and i find it useful as i am mainly using my ps3 as a blu-ray player. the remote itself looks nice, as if it were for a standalone player. while others don't like the button layout, i find it to be acceptable. it is also responsive. in terms of problems, there is no power button and it's hard to see the buttons in the dark. overall, pretty good!

Must have for movie watching

Strengths: Bluetooth, matches other PS3 accessories, price

Weakness: Not universal, buttons are hard to see in the dark

The remote works great and is much easier to use than the PS3 controller. It's fairly inexpensive and since it uses bluetooth, it will work no matter what direction it's pointed in. Much nicer than the PS2 dvd remote, however, the buttons are still hard to see in the dark.

Decent Remote

Strengths: Doesn't feel like the cheap PS remotes of old, looks nice and fits in with the mountain of current remotes. Good range.

Weakness: Bluetooth only (would love to be able to use my universal remote), could be backlit

Overall a good remote for the money. It doesn't look and feel cheap like some of the other remotes I've seen/used with other gaming systems. The only thing I could suggest is make it backlit.

PS3 Blu-Ray remote

Strengths: much more convenient for Blu-Ray/DVD watching than using the PS3 controller

Weakness: no backlight or glow in the dark buttons or colored buttons.

If you are going to use your PS3 to watch a lot of Blu-Ray movies or DVD movies than you must get this remote. After using the PS3 controller to watch movies, I knew I needed something better. So I bought this Sony Blu-Ray remote and it works much better than the PS3 controller for watching movies.

That said, I still think this remote could be a lot better. You would think by now that Sony would know how to design an ergonomic user-friendly remote. The fact that the buttons are all BLACK on a BLACK backround makes it very difficult to use the remote in the dark when need it the most - watching a movie at night with the lights off. Sony could have used different color buttons or glow in the dark buttons or added a back light feature. I occasionally hit the stop button when I wanted the pause or the skip chapter button when I wanted the fast forward.

Overall I still prefer this remote to the PS3 controller though - you just have to memorize the key buttons or turn on the light.

Works for me

Strengths: bluetooth, better than using the darn controller.

Weakness: Only works for PS3, no back lighting.

I bought this remote because my primary motivation for buying a PlayStation 3 was for watching blu-ray movies and up-scaled DVDs. I didn't want to sit there trying to control everything with the controller. I bought the controller and it serves its purpose. It's a lot easier controlling the movie player with this controller. I'm not the kind of person that has a $400.00 uber remote that can control everything in my house (including the garbage disposal), so I don't get worked up that I can't control every electronic device in the world with it. It serves its purpose and it serves it well. It's bluetooth, so I can be almost anywhere and control my PS3 without having to point it at the console. I like it, it makes it a lot easier to watch movies with my PS3.

Good Buy

Strengths: Relatively reasonable price

Weakness: Doesn't control any other device, Bluetooth only connectivity

Good accessory for people who are using PS3 mainly for its Blu-ray functionality. Easy to use. Some of the controls may not function as well. Inability to control other electronic devices, being only bluetooth capable makes it not a preferred remote.

A Simple and Easy Remote..... But Bluetooth Only!!!!!

Strengths: Easy to setup via Bluetooth sync. No USB sync required. Easy to read buttons and direct access to functions not available through the game controllers

Weakness: Not usb rechargable or rechargable battery. cheap Alkline Batteries included

I bought this item to take advantage of the Blu-ray player features of my Playstation 3. It made accessing and playing my Blu-ray movie quick and easy. I especially found accessing advanced feature easier. One of the problems I had with the remote was that the remote only used bluetooth, which is a pain since I already had a universal remote and couldn't use that to control the Playstation 3. However, they could have gone the other way and added a universal IR function to remote to use with my TV but they didn't. It makes the remote only useful for the Playstation 3. Eventhough this is a remote only for the Playstation 3 they could have made it more useful by supporting people with an entertainment center. Not every device in an entertainment center uses Bluetooth to control it.
