Every computer that I have had to date has had an Intel processor. Based on reviews that I read and curiosity on my part about the product, I decided to try the AMD 64 3800+ processor. I was totally amaze by the lightning speed with which this processor works. It doesn't matter what task I send its way, this processor handles it without even exerting itself. In a word, this processor is AWESOME! With apologies to Intel fans, I'm glad that I switched.

FYI: Although I've used and made minor modifications to computers for almost twenty years, this is the first time that I built one from scratch. The system consists of: An AMD 64 3800+ processor; the Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard; Corsair TwinX1024-3200XL memory modules; an Antec Truepower 550 power source; and, a WD 740GB, Serial ATA harddrive.

Although out of stock at the time, I am expecting to shortly receive an ATI Radeon X800 Pro video card. In the meantime, I am using an ATI Radeon 9000 video card that I borrowed from my old computer. I can't wait to see the effect of combining this card with such a high performance processor as the AMD 64 3800+.

Don't be afraid to leave Intel...

Strengths: Lightning quick. Great for gaming. Uses the new 939 socket.

Weakness: Not all software has drivers for 64-bit processor. Should take another 6 months or so.

Don't be afraid to leave Intel behind! This is one of the fastest processors that AMD has to offer. The 64-bit processor even allows for the new Windows 64-bit operating system. When building a computer from scratch I went for a processor that could handle Doom 3 and other games that are coming out in the next year.

Strengths: Very speedy and a good place on the price value curve.

Weakness: None.

This was my first AMD64 processor, and it was a snap to install and has been rock solid stable ever since. I went with AMD because of the Nforce 4 chipset, and it turns out to be a great replacement for my P4 1.8 GHz. No problems.

This processor is a beauty. Was easy to install the heatsink which is always my most dreaded moment when assembling my system. Requires a lot of pressure but the heatsink actually has a slot you can put your screwdriver in to apply the pressure, so that the head doesnt slip and drive a hole through your MB. Strengths: integrated DDR memory controller, 64 / 32 bit support, good gaming processor, relatively inexpensive compared to comperable P4 processord

Weakness: Not as fast as P4 for multitasking efforts & office applications

The processor in the box comes with a decent heat sink / fan and you really don't need anything more besides the packaging says using anything else voids the warranty on the processor so beware of that. The installation was straight forward although getting the clips to latch on required some force. The processor is a good upgrade for me but it's not the speed demon I had hoped for. My boot up times in XP seem about the same as my old P4 1.4 ghz processor. I bought 2 gig's of ram and I'm not sure that was needed 1 gig would have probably been plenty.
