Product Details of Linksys WPS54G Print Server

Description

The Linksys Wireless-G PrintServer lets you connect a USB printer directly to your network, eliminating the need to dedicate a PC to print sharing chores. Using a PrintServer frees up your ""print share PC"" so you don't have to leave it on all the time. It also removes the printing bottleneck, and sets your PC free to do more useful work. Connect the PrintServer directly to your network by 10/100 Ethernet cable, or wirelessly over 54Mbps Wireless-G (802.11g). The wireless option lets you put your printer wherever you want to, without having to run cables. Whichever way the PrintServer is attached to your network, both your wireless and wired PCs will have access to it, and the printer it's connected to. And if you don't use wireless for general networking in your office, you can still use the Wireless-G connection in ad-hoc mode to print from visiting Wireless-G and Wireless-B PCs.

Linksys 802.11G PRINT SERVER USB 2.0

Strengths: Good product does what it says on the box

Weakness: Gets hot and you need a little more knowledge with Networking

This is a great product if you know how to configure your network correctly. It works well with my HP wide format printer. It does also work with my HP All-In-One but with the scanning option disable. It still works with the memory card readers. If you are sending large files make sure you have a good wireless signal strength and your printer has sufficient installed ram otherwise your print...

Works as advertised (almost)

Strengths: It does what it is intended to do, make any USB printer into a wirelessly-networked printer.

Weakness: Setup wizard is terrible if you need WEP, does not actually use G-band (it uses B).

After some initial hassles with the "setup wizard" I was happy with this purchase. However I discovered 2 things that were problematic during the initial setup: 1. If your home wireless network uses WEP, you need to ignore that step in the setup wizard, and configure WEP manually using the web-based interface before you disconnect the ethernet cable. 2. If you have a B/G access point, you have to...

Wireless fails using WPA security

Strengths: small, light, cute!

Weakness: Bad software, protection

DO NOT buy this unit if you plan on using WPA encryption. Other web complaints have said WPA fails with the latest firmware loads and they are correct. Set it up for WPA and your wireless connection disappears. Otherwise, it works great over ethernet. It's not hard to set up if you follow the instructions exactly. I wouldn't buy it and wait for a fix - not worth it.

They don't tell you it's no good for multifuntions...

Strengths: Good reception, compact

Weakness: Doesn't work for multifunctions due to 1-way communications (I assume).

I purchased this rather expensive device in the hopes that it was going to help me with the wireless set-up difficulties I was having with my multifunction. After lots of time on hold and calling manufacturers of my MFC and Linksys, I finally found out that this doesn't work if you want to scan back to the PC from a MFC. Otherwise, it worked for just printing.

Works with my MFC

Strengths: Easy set up, small package

Weakness: Seems a bit warm, unclear instructions, doesn't support non-printing fuctionality

I was a little nervous purchasing this to use in conjunction with my Brother MFC-7420 (which is a laser printer/scanner/fax/copier). I decided to take a plunge and take it back if it didn't work out. I expected it to be much more difficult to set up, but I basically followed the instructions and it worked like a charm. Now, I am a IT support technician, so your mileage may very, but I found it...

WPS54G Wireless Print Server

Strengths: WPS54G has good signal coverage. I can place it at anywhere in my house away from my router.

Weakness: Warm.

I have connected WPS54G to my Hewlett-Packard Officejet 4110 multifunction printer. I can print without any issue from 3 computers at home. Although the scan function cannot be used, it does not bother me. The reason is I can connect the printer directly via USB to my laptop since I have to be at the printer to feed documents for scanning. It is a small and sleek looking equipment.

Linksys WPS54G Print Server

Strengths: Easy installation and TKIP encryption compatibility

Weakness: Gets very warm.

Easy installation and good tech support. I had run into a problem with resetting the print server to its default settings. Had to hold the reset button for ten seconds and while pushing it in, I had to remove the power supply. I tried the Motorola Print Server which mentions that it can support the TKIP encryption but it did not work with my D-Link Wireless router. It only supports that...

Linksys WPS54G Print Server

Strengths: Small and easy installation. After you set the IP address you can do everything through a web browser. WPA!

Weakness: Runs warm

This print server is great. I received it and within 30 minutes I was printing up a storm. To set up the print server, hook it up to your network through ethernet and run the CD software (no installation of software onto your computer required). Change the settings to what you desire and save them to the server. I then connected (using USB) the print server up to my printer in a seperate room,...

Linksys WPS54G Print Server

Strengths: None!

Weakness: Compatability & high operating temperature.

The Linksys WPS54G is incompatable with their WRT54GX (SRX) The router would not communicate wireless without a beta version (4407) firmware update. After the update, the print server would lock up and have to be hard booted in order to re-establish communication. I spent at least 4 hours per day for 5 days trying to work things out with Linksys Tech Support. With the exception of two tech...

Linksys 802.11G PRINT SERVER USB 2.0 Review

Strengths: Cisco backed reliability, easy setup.

Weakness: Does not support multifunction printers.

I am a Network Engineer by profession and decided to test the Linksys WPS54G at home because there were so many conflicting reviews. The setup was fairly easy, but for the average home user I believe it could present some challenges. Follow some of these tips to make the setup easier. If your wireless network is setup with MAC filters or encryption, disable both of these prior to setup. You can...
